Cool Stuff I've Found...

 Cat LItterbox Auto-Cleaner
Back to Full Blog

Have cats? Read on!...

Well, I have two cats... my first two. I got them 6 years ago. I'm really lazy in general and I hate cleaning the litter box. Well, I who doesn't?

I have had the Littermaid auto-scooper for years and loved it. I think it is one of the more popular on the market. If you hunt around you can usually find it for just under $100. It has always worked well but it has a few annoying quirks. One of the biggest was that it gets "stuck" easily. I'm not sure how to describe it other than the automatic arm that scoops the litter out would not be strong enough to move through certain parts of the box (sometimes) and it would not be able to complete its task... this was annoying.

So I saw a new brand at the store the other day -- the Stylette Litter Sweep Ultra for $79! They also sell a cheaper one that does not "auto" sense for $59, the Litter Round Up. The woman at PetCo said that they have had some Littermaid units get returned by never had this new brand get returned... so I thought I would give it a try.

It's been about a week, and it works really well so far. It does take much longer to complete its task and it is a little louder -- it takes about 1-2 minutes to go through its cleaning process compared to the littermaid which only took about 20-30 seconds. However, it seems to be much more reliable and do a better job at evening out the litter. Basically its not as "finnicky". Combine that with the cheaper price and I highly suggest it.

Oh one other thing! The littermaid unit requires expensive plastic containers. This unit uses much cheaper bags -- they resemble hair nets you would use in the shower (they might even be hairnets!). So over the long haul you will save money as well.

The PetSmart website sells it here.

On the Litter Sweep Ultra. I have now had 3. Brilliant design, extraordinarly flawed execution. Where to begin. First, the recepticle is too small. Two cats, one day and the scooper is unable to empty and carries its load back into the pan resulting in a clog or jam. The "ring" on the top is easily dislodged causing jams. The motor is too loud and the gearing is too weak. If a jam occurs or the "load" is too heavy, the gears snap loudly, over and over until it finally can complete the cycle. It can wake the dead. Now for the good part. When it works, it works great. They really missed the mark here. The point is not to create a flawed device that can sell for $79.00 but and excellent device that a cat owner would pay through the nose for. I for one would pay 3 times that for a device that worked reliably. The flaws are obvious and easily remedied. What is taking so damn long? DO IT!

Yes I have noticed the same things - also I just noticed that it does not sweep all the litter out properly and the litter gets "wet" and does not function as well -- maybe I need to get a different brand. I have had the same problem with the ring being dislodged -- i solved that with a piece of packing tape to hold the ring on. And i have had the clicking happen, I think it happens when you overload the hopper with litter... that was the same problem with the littermaid unit. I do have to say the Ultra is more reliable than the littermaid -- after a few months the litter maid would basically cease to work properly, getting "stuck" all the time and when it gets stuck it just goes back and forth over and over. The major problem with it was that my cats would go only on one side of the Littermaid, causing it to be inbalanced. the Ultra is round and solves that problem -- it was a clever design but the contraption to scoop does seem too complex and not strong enough as you said.

I have the littermaid and have the exact same "not enough muscle behind the rake" problem - cats love to go continually on one side or excessively bury moving litter to one side, and the rake just can't get through.

I've been looking around for a new and better self-cleaning litterbox but I don't want to have similar or different but equally annoying problems. So I just want to say thank you for the posts. They've been very helpful.
