Cool Stuff I've Found...

 Vonage Internet Phone
Back to Full Blog

You might have seen the commercials, or heard about them... Vonage is one of, if not the, biggest Internet phone company.

They work great and the price is fantastic. Its about $25 for a residential line and $49 a month for a commerical line (which gets you two phone lines, one for talking and one for fax).

Many of the plans offer unlimited US/Canada calling -- it's all one zone. No "local" and "long distance" rates. And if you have an allotted minute plan and go over, its only 3-4 cents per minute. International calls are extremely cheap too.

The best features about Vonage:

* If you go to your local CompUSA/BestBuy or other computer chain, you can buy the Vonage hardware, go home, and install it within an hour. Also, once you have one line setup, adding more numbers or lines can be done in minutes through an online system.

* If you travel abroad, you can take the miniature Vonage box with you, or use the new computer software and a headset to have access to your home phone. If you live in NYC, you can travel to China, plug in your Vonage box (to a broadband connection) and get/make phone calls just like you are in NYC for no charge!

* You get ALL the features you would normally pay for, for free -- voice mail, caller ID, call waiting, transfer, call forwarding, multi-ring, you name it, they have it. It's all included in your phone package. Just adding those features to your regular phone would cost you $40-50!

* In most areas you can transfer your current phone number to Vonage

* It works exactly like a real phone -- you can even plug your existing phone into it and use your home wiring.

* For $5 a month you can add 800 service, or add a local phone # anywhere in the US/Canada and now I think the UK. So if you are based in NYC, you can have phone numbers all over the country for a low cost that all connect to your NYC phone!

The Negatives -- yes, there are a few:

* You need a broadband connection (DSL or Cable), which costs some money, but if you already have one you are all set.

* It can take weeks to transfer your current number to the Vonage service if you decide to switch -- so you have to keep your existing number in the mean time. I've done it, and it transferred fine, it just took a while. Hopefully they will improve this over time.

* It is not as reliable as a real phone -- I have been using it for about 3 years, it has its quirks. I like to say "it's 98% of a real phone". If your broadband connection goes down, or the power goes out, most likely you are going to lose your Vonage service. Also, you are at the mercy of the Internet. However, the cost savings definitely makes up for it if you can live with minor inconveniences.

* If you have a TIVO that dials out on the phone, it may or may not work with Vonage. Also, most security alarms that dial out on the phone will not work and some fax machines have problems.

* Vonage customer service is hit or miss -- sometimes you get right through sometimes you wait a little bit. They have improved -- they went through a huge growth spurt earlier this year and have been adding staff. However, on the positive side, you rarely need to talk to them. Most everything you need to do can be done online.

Definitely check them out -- you can signup and try them along side your current phone, and if it does not work out just cancel. I use them for business and love it -- the fact that I can add new lines in minutes is fantastic.

Do you work for Vonage? Just kidding. Thanks for your post on my blog. I am very pleased with my Vonage phone. I have to reboot the router occasionally. But, I agree, it is 98% as realiable. I never notice the difference unless the electricity goes off. Happy phoning!

Nope -- no relation and I'm not making anything from the link! I just get passionate about things I find cool. :) Vonage is not for everybody, and actually at home I have one "regular" line and one Internet line for reliability in an emergency.

You might as well make something for advertising Vonage. If you look at their webpage (bottom) and click on the affiliate link and sign up you will get a clone site and receive commissions on sales.Unless Vonage has changed this is no cost to you.Point the link to your clone site and you are good. By the way you might want to take a look at this site and think about the possibilities http://www.telebay.com/88870/mallopp.html Coloconnect

Here's a product you might want to look at because it's FREE. I have used Skype VoIP for six months now, have never lost a call, get clarity far beyond what I obtain on my landlines, and only rarely lose a word or two. I make lengthy international and interstate calls, both to Skype members (free) and to landline numbers (approximately 3 cents a minute). the people I talk to almost always comment on how clear the call is. In short, I have found the program to be excellent.....Buck.

Vonage is extemely worth every penny. The quality of service I do agree is dependent on the broadband service. At the time I signed up for Vonage I had Verizon for local and long distance. I decided to get rid of Verizon all together and go Vonage full-force. It took nearly 3 months before I was totally set free of traditional phone service. Now I am enjoying the great low Vonage rates and exceptional phone service. Plus I can take my Vonage phone adapter to any place with broadband and use my service when I travel.

Yeh, but I think Vonage has serious, serious problems with support. I tried to transfer my business number from Qwest to Vonage, and Vonage dropped the transfer and it took me almost two months to get Vonage to pick it up. I had a dead line during that time and it cost me over $8000. For more information and correspondence see: http://www.netadventures.biz/vonageproblem.htm. You want to do business with a company with that kind of core values and ethics? I tried contacting the FCC, but the Administration has gone south. The Emporer has no clothes.

Yes their support is not as great -- and they did have problems earlier in the year when they grew dramatically. It has definitely improved however. I went through the same problem you did with the line transfer, however I kept my old line operational until the new line was setup. When you are transfering they give you a temporary number to use until your transfer is complete. I kept my old line operational and had the phone company setup a forward from the transfered number to the temporary number and lost no calls and had no business interruption. For example, if the number with Company X is 111-222-3333 and I am transfering to vonage, vonage gives you a temporary number like 444-555-6666 -- call your phone company X and tell them to just forward any calls on 111-222-3333 to 444-555-6666... then initiate your transfer and start using your new Vonage line. Any calls to your old number will work both before and after the transfer takes place. Vonage even gave me 2 months service free for the delay, so it cost me nothing.

I guess it depends on the type of business you have, and how much you are looking to save. For me, the features and ease of setup are the top importance -- I was able to setup a new business line in less than 1 hour, with no technician having to come to my office. I can also travel around the world with my laptop and use my phone as if I were in my office... traditional and internet based phones really serve two different purposes.

I just read your page about your problem -- my problem was just a delay in the transfer, not a lost line. Not sure what caused the issue you had -- it could just as well be a Qwest issue as a Vonage issue(?) It sounds like your phone companies were playing the blame game. I know two others who have transferred lines without problem or with the most, a delay of a few weeks.

Just try to cancel the Vonage contract!

I recently had a Vonage telephone service when I lived in New York State. When I decided to move to the sunny south, I called Vonage and requested cancellation of my service. They told me my service would be cancelled. It was not! In fact, they kept billing my credit card for 4 months after the fact.

Long Story Short

I called Vonage and after an hour of going through gatekeepers, I finally got to a supervisor who promptly hung up on me!
The only way I was able to dump this Villanous Vicious Vonage from Hell was to cancel my credit card!

Recommendation:

DON'T JOIN VONAGE unless you intend to be indebeted to them for life!
